Speed Test Results

Speed Test Results (Jun 2026)

How fast are Proton VPN speeds? My testing shows Proton VPN to be a fast VPN with a decent initial speed retention rate and ping. All tests were conducted over a certified 1 Gbps fiber connection utilizing the WireGuard protocol. We ran more than 30 speed tests per location over a two-week period.

  • My baseline was 1ms ping, 500Mbps download and 500Mbps upload before I connected to the VPN
  • I connected to the US servers and got 105ms ping, 444Mbps download speed and 189Mbps upload speed. That’s an 88% download speed beginning speed retention rate
  • My UK server connection gave me a ping of 36ms, download speed of 358Mbps and upload of 455Mbps. That’s an initial download speed retention rate of 71.6 percent
  • Connected to the Germany servers I received 33ms ping, 459Mbps down and 455Mbps up. That’s an initial download speed retention rate of 91.8 percent
  • I connected to servers in Singapore and received a ping of 192ms, download speed of 379Mbps and upload speed of 103Mbps. That’s a 75.8% starting speed retention rate for download speed

Note: The speeds will vary substantially depending on how close you are to the server you’re connected to, how fast your initial network connection is, what hardware you’re using, time of day, and other things.

Privacy & Security

Privacy & Security – What Makes Proton VPN Different?

Proton is as a privacy-first company. Its VPN product is no different – and doesn’t disappoint. We should first address the fact that it is a Swiss company. Being based in Switzerland means the company is protected by some VPN customer-friendly data privacy laws.

Proton uses either AES-256 (supported by OpenVPN) or ChaCha20 encryption (supported by WireGuard) to protect your data, both of which are rock-solid. It supports a range of protocols, including OpenVPN, WireGuard, IKEv2 and Stealth. These safe encryption algorithms keep your data secret.

  • OpenVPN: A versatile, open source protocol that’s secure. Proton VPN works with both TCP and UDP. But in general, OpenVPN UDP has superior speed advantages than OpenVPN TCP.
  • WireGuard (UDP and TCP): I’d highly recommend this protocol if you want the greatest speeds when streaming huge bandwidth. It’s lightweight and considered the most advanced.
  • Stealth Protocol: Proton provides this protocol to prevent censorship. It can be used in places like China where VPN use is forbidden.
  • Smart Protocol: Perhaps the best feature of Proton VPN. If you choose Smart option the optimum protocol will be automatically selected for you, depending on your location and network conditions.

Proton VPN offers a free and paid version. Its free plan stands out because it allows unlimited bandwidth. However, Proton’s free version restricted us to servers in only five countries. We recommend the free plan if you just want to secure your browsing through VPN encryption. Proton VPN’s paid plans add access to all of the VPN’s features, including split-tunneling and the ad-blocker, NetShield. They also add P2P and streaming support and expand the device limit to 10 devices. In short, they offer more functionality.

Testing Methodology

ProtonVPN How We Tested – The Methodology

All claims in this review are supported by real-world test, independent security documentation and hands-on experience. Over a two-week period, we tested ProtonVPN against the same criteria we use to assess all the VPNs on our list.

We paid for the subscription ourselves
We don’t have any “sponsored” accounts, review licenses, or vendor-provided access. We paid for Proton VPN Plus ourselves, out of our editorial budget, and tested it as a paying customer would.

30+ speed tests per site on multiple procedures
We ran over 30 speed tests on each server location with a certified 1 Gbps fiber connection. We tested WireGuard, OpenVPN, and Proton VPN’s Smart Protocol throughout peak and off-peak hours in North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East.

Secure Core Testing, Privacy and Leak
We performed DNS, IPv6 and WebRTC leak tests before, during and after 50 forced connection breaks. We also tested Proton VPN’s Secure Core function to see how it affects privacy and performance.

Streaming tests on 10 main platforms
We tried with numerous servers in multiple countries for Netflix, Disney+, BBC iPlayer, Hulu, Max, Amazon Prime Video, ESPN+, Hotstar, DAZN, and YouTube TV. We measured VPN streaming quality, buffering, and detection rate.

Audit and review for openness
We looked at Proton VPN’s disclosed security audits, open-source software documentation, transparency reports and no-logs policy. The company’s Swiss jurisdiction as well as its Secure Core infrastructure were noted.

Testing of P2P, support and refunds
We examined Proton VPN’s P2P-optimized servers, how port forwarding works, and how quickly their customer service responded. We also tried the refund process to see how fast they process cancelation requests.
